Insurance Coverage for Registered Psychologists
If your insurance plan only covers Registered Psychologists, counselling and psychotherapy services provided by the members of our counselling team may still be insurable under the guidelines of supervised psychological practice. What does this mean?
Supervised psychological practice occurs when services are provided by someone who is not a psychologist, under the supervision of someone who is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario who accepts full legal and ethical responsibility for your care.
Most insurance plans will cover services provided via supervised psychological practice. Some do not. It is important to clarify what your insurer will cover.
We suggest that you contact your insurer and ask the following question:
“If a Registered Psychologist, who is legally and ethically responsible for my care, is providing services through the supervision of someone who is not a psychologist as permitted by the College of Psychologists of Ontario, are these services covered by my plan?”
Note: The members of our psychotherapy and counselling team are primarily Registered Psychotherapists, Qualifying Registered Psychotherapists, or Registered Social Workers. Some members of our counselling team are currently unregistered as they are in the process of completing their Master’s degree or are new graduates awaiting registration with a regulating college. Members of our counselling team who are registered with a regulating college, and who are working under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist, are subject to the standards of both their regulating college (i.e., College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario; The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers) and the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
